Logo Best Practices

So, you got your new logo and you’re excited to start using it. You may want to rush out and put your new logo everywhere but you should stop and consider a few things first. How can you best use your new creative identity and honor the symbol of your business? Here are some Do’s and Don’ts to help guide you through appropriate usage and keep your branding looking great.

DO:

Place your logo in the bottom corner of images you post on social media to promote your brand.

DON'T:

Use complex logo marks in small spaces or where the print or digital footprint will be too small for your audience to clearly read. If you require logos to fit in a small space you may need a responsive logo system.

Do place logos on a clear background. Don't place logos on a busy background.

DO:

Ensure you keep clear space around your logo. If you crowd it too close to other elements it gets hidden in the chaos. The eye is drawn to white space so be sure you keep some white space around it.

DON'T:

Place your logo over the top of busy backgrounds. Use a simple background behind your logo so it can be read clearly.

Do user the correct file types and formats. Don't skew or stretch logos to fit a space.

DO:

Use the proper file type and format for each usage of the logo. Certain file types have benefits over others depending on where you are using the creative.

DON'T:

Skew, stretch, or warp your logo to fit an odd space. Use the appropriately proportioned logo version (horizontal or vertical) or simply reduce the size of your logo to fit. A small logo looks better than a smooshed logo.

Do keep your logo colors consistent. Don't change your logo coloring or add heavy drop shadows.

DO:

Keep your logo colors consistent to your branding. Never change the color of your logo to anything outside your standard branding no matter what. Always keep fidelity to the brand in all your creative.

DON'T:

Add graphic effects to your logo. If it was not designed with a heavy drop shadow or texture overlay, do not add one. It will damage the fidelity of your brand and make your logo look amateurish.

Do use your logo as intended. Do not add stylized graphic treatments to your logo.

Keeping these Do's and Don'ts in mind, how have you done with managing your brand? Its always a good idea to go through your customer facing branding every once in a while and refine it to ensure everything is cohesive across the board. Many businesses use branding guides to keep their logo treatments consistent and ensure their employees know how to handle the brand as well. Take some time this week to look things over and consider developing a branding guide for your business.
